The official opening of the 2025 World Robot Olympiad Zimbabwe National Finals yesterday served as a powerful testament to the crucial role of collaboration in driving the nation’s technological advancement with both government and private sector leaders highlighting their shared commitment to fostering innovation and digital growth.

Speaking at the event, Deputy Minister of Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services, Honourable Dingumuzi Phuti, emphasized this crucial collaboration, stating that the success of initiatives like the WRO, and the broader push towards a knowledge-based economy, relies heavily on combined efforts.

“Your collaboration with the Girls in STEM Trust is a powerful example of how private sector involvement can complement Government efforts to build a digital future,” said Phuti. He emphasized that this support is not merely an investment in technology, but a profound investment in people, communities, schools, and the immense promise of Zimbabwe’s youth.

National Coordinator for World Robot Olympiad Zimbabwe Victoria Nxumalo, echoed this sentiment, crediting “phenomenal partners” for the event’s expansion from just 19 teams in 2024 to 53 teams representing all 10 provinces in this year’s edition.

“These partnerships extend beyond financial backing, facilitating groundbreaking initiatives. A notable example is the introduction of a new, advanced micro-controller with embedded sensors—a first for Africa—brought in through a partnership with Databot USA,” Nxumalo stated.

She further highlighted that the successful piloting of an AI-powered classroom solution, Merlyn Origin, by Girls in STEM Trust and Merlyn Mind (USA), showcases how private innovation is directly enhancing educational delivery in line with Zimbabwe’s Heritage Based Curriculum and Education 5.0.
