Zimbabwe is set to upgrade urban traffic management, with the accelerated implementation of a Home-Grown Smart Traffic Management System, which aims to tackle persistent issues of traffic congestion, road accidents, and violations of traffic laws across the country.
Developed by local telecommunications giant TelOne as part of the Safe City Project, this innovative system leverages cutting-edge technologies including the Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and big data analytics to improve traffic flow, enhance road safety, and promote transparency in law enforcement.
Speaking during the post-Cabinet media briefing in Harare yesterday, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Dr Jenfan Muswerealso stated that the system will also boast a platform that can predict traffic patterns and optimize signal timing, alongside an automated enforcement system for issuing fines.
Minister Muswere further added that the system will be able to detect a wide array of infractions, from red-light violations and speeding to illegal parking and failure to wear seatbelts. Beyond traffic, the system will also offer crime management functions, including crowd detection and monitoring.
The rollout of the Home-Grown Traffic Management System will occur in phases, starting with Harare and Bulawayo, before expanding to other major towns.
