The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development has ordered Tika Chem Investments (Pvt) Ltd to fully repair infrastructure damaged by one of its trucks at the newly completed Trababalas Interchange in Harare.

According to the Ministry, the truck was transporting granite stone on 8 July when its load fell off, damaging the guard rails and sections of the newly constructed pavement.

“The truck, owned by Tika Chem Investments, was involved in an incident where the load fell, causing damage to the guard rails and pavement at the Trababalas Interchange,” the Ministry said in a statement.

Following the incident, the Vehicle Inspection Department (VID) impounded the truck for further investigations. The Ministry has since directed the company to carry out all necessary repairs at its own cost before the vehicle can be released.

“The Ministry has directed the truck owner to undertake full repairs of the damaged infrastructure at their own cost,” the statement read.

“The truck will only be released upon satisfactory completion of the repairs and after VID has conducted the necessary inspections to ensure the vehicle meets all safety standards.”

The Ministry used the incident to issue a stern reminder to transporters and the motoring public about their role in protecting public assets. Authorities say damage to infrastructure due to negligence or lack of accountability will not be tolerated.

“We urge all operators to safeguard public infrastructure,” the Ministry stated.

“Citizens must also report any acts of vandalism or negligence that may result in damage to roads, bridges, or other critical infrastructure.”

It further warned that failure to report such damage places unnecessary strain on public funds and undermines efforts to preserve infrastructure for future generations.

“Failure to report vandalism or infrastructure damage contributes to unnecessary financial burdens on taxpayers. Let us all work together to protect and preserve our national infrastructure for the benefit of present and future generations,” the Ministry added.
