President Emmerson Mnangagwa has commended the Zimbabwe national rugby team, the Sables, for advancing to the semi-finals of the Rugby Africa Cup following their 43–8 win over Morocco.
The President made the remarks during a special send-off event at State House, where he also donated US$100,000 to support the team’s campaign.
The Sables will face Kenya in the semi-final this Sunday in Uganda, as they chase Africa’s sole qualification spot for the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia.
Addressing the team, President Mnangagwa praised their recent performance.
“I want to congratulate you, Sables, for the victory against Morocco earlier this week. I am very happy for that victory.”
He highlighted the significance of the achievement, describing it as part of a broader national goal to revitalise Zimbabwe’s sports sector.
“This achievement is pivotal as we continue our journey to reposition and refocus our sporting delivery systems, which is a critical part towards an excelling sporting nation which Zimbabwe is becoming.”
The President urged the players to embrace their role as ambassadors for Zimbabwe on the international stage.
“Your participation in the international arena automatically makes you a brand ambassador of Zimbabwe. I therefore challenge you to utilise this role as sports diplomats to promote our country’s image, tourism and investment prospects under our engagement and re-engagement policy.”
He assured the team of continued government support, expressing confidence in their ability to qualify for the World Cup.
“Be assured that our nation is behind you, the government will continue to support you, and I, your President, am confident in your dedication and your sporting abilities. Congratulations in advance.”
Wishing them well, the President concluded:
“As you embark on your journey to qualify for the World Cup, may your excursions yield great success for our country. Go out there and make Zimbabwe proud. We wish you all the best of luck.”
The Rugby Africa Cup features eight of the continent’s top rugby nations competing for a single qualification spot at the global tournament.
