Zimbabwe has reiterated its commitment to eradicating corruption and crime, aligning itself with the African Union Convention on the Prevention and Combating of Corruption, as the nation marked African Anti-Corruption Day last Friday in Gwanda.
Acting Deputy Prosecutor General Mrs. T.R Takuva, representing Prosecutor General Hon. Joyce Matanda-Moyo, delivered a strong message on the country’s resolve to confront corruption head-on. Speaking on behalf of the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), she said public prosecutors are at the heart of the fight for accountability and integrity.
“The African Union’s commitment to combating corruption and crime, as enshrined in the AU Convention, is a testament to our collective understanding that this scourge is a major impediment to Africa’s development and the well-being of its people,” she said.
“As public prosecutors, we are on the frontline of this battle. Our role extends beyond merely securing convictions.”
She stressed that the mission of the prosecuting authority goes deeper than courtroom victories, it is also about restoring confidence in the justice system and preventing future wrongdoing.
“It is fundamentally about restoring public faith in our institutions and deterring future criminal conduct, ultimately safeguarding the human dignity of every person in Zimbabwe.”
Highlighting recent reforms, Mrs. Takuva said the NPAZ continues to modernize its systems and processes to increase efficiency and impact.
“The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe is unwavering in its resolve. We are continuously enhancing our capacity, embracing technological advancement, and fostering greater collaboration with law enforcement agencies and other justice delivery actors.”
She also reaffirmed the institution’s dedication to equality before the law, saying corruption undermines the very foundation of justice and dignity.
“We are committed to ensuring that no one is above the law, and that those who seek to enrich themselves at the expense of the public good are held accountable. Our efforts are geared towards strengthening the rule of law, which is the bedrock upon which human dignity thrives.”
Mrs. Takuva concluded by calling on every sector of society to take part in the anti-corruption agenda, acknowledging that prosecutors alone cannot defeat the problem.
“We recognise that the fight against corruption is not solely the responsibility of law enforcement agents and the prosecuting authorities. It requires a whole-of-society approach. We commend the role of civil society organisations, the media, and every citizen who stands up against corruption and demands accountability.”
