The Progressive Teachers’ Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) has warned that the smooth opening of schools for the third term could be disrupted if government fails to urgently address teachers’ salaries.

Speaking to SkyzMetro FM, PTUZ President, Dr. Takafira Zhou, stated that the unresolved salary grievances risk derailing preparations for national examinations set to begin in October.

He noted that despite a 2024 agreement for quarterly salary reviews, teachers have gone nearly two years without any adjustments, leaving wages heavily eroded by the rising cost of living.

Dr. Zhou stressed that without a cost-of-living adjustment and restoration of the pre-2018 basic salary of US$540, many teachers may not be motivated to return to their stations.

The union appealed to government and the Public Service Commission to act during the holiday period to avoid a standstill when schools open on the 9th of September.
