A military court in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has sentenced former President Joseph Kabila to death in absentia.

The ruling was handed down on yesterday in Kinshasa by tribunal president Lieutenant-General Joseph Mutombo Katalayi.

Kabila was convicted of serious crimes including treason, war crimes, crimes against humanity, murder, sexual assault, torture, and insurrection.

Kabila ruled the DRC for nearly two decades before stepping down after deadly protests.

Since late 2023, he has been living mostly in South Africa, though he briefly resurfaced in rebel-held Goma in May this year.
