Zimbabwe has officially launched its campaign to become a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2027–2028 term, signaling a bold step in the country’s foreign policy ambitions.

Speaking during the Post-Cabinet Media Briefing on Tuesday, Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development Minister, Hon. Prof. Dr. Amon Murwira, confirmed the country’s candidature was unveiled in New York.

“Zimbabwe is seeking one of the rotating seats on the powerful global body, which is responsible for maintaining international peace and security”, Professor Murwira said .

He further stated that If successful, the country will represent Africa’s voice in critical global decision-making at a time when the continent’s influence is increasingly being recognised.

Minister Murwira said the move aligns with Zimbabwe’s long-standing commitment to multilateralism, diplomacy, and international cooperation. He emphasized that the country is prepared to serve with integrity and to advocate for equitable global governance.

The campaign is expected to focus on Zimbabwe’s track record in peacekeeping, regional stability, and its growing role in global forums. Analysts say this marks a strategic moment for Zimbabwe to redefine its image on the world stage after years of international isolation.

Elections for the 2027–2028 term will be held in 2026 at the UN General Assembly.
