Dreams of nurturing the next generation of women football stars in Bulawayo have suffered a major setback after Mpopoma Sports Academy (Mposa) announced its withdrawal from the Zimbabwe Women’s Premier Soccer League due to severe financial challenges.

Speaking to Skyz Metro FM, Club Director James Rugwevera confirmed the heartbreaking decision, describing it as “painful” and a result of hitting the “last hurdle” in their battle to stay afloat.

“Its almost a year we have been writing letters throughout Bulawayo and outside Bulawayo but we not getting any help”, cried Rugwevera.

He added that while the team hopes to fulfil its remaining fixtures, it may not be possible. The club has already defaulted on two matches, raising doubts about its ability to continue.

“As for now it’s very difficult to continue but we’ll try to push a little bit but if we fail, we would have failed” he said. “Its so painful that we are failing at a last hurdle”.

What makes the situation even more painful is that some players are still unaware of the club’s looming exit. Currently sitting at sixth place on the league table, Mposa had shown promise making the news a devastating blow to players, staff, and supporters alike.

Rugwevera appealed to potential sponsors to step in and save the team, which has been a vital platform for young female footballers in Bulawayo.
