Zimbabwe is set to record another record-breaking wheat harvest in 2025, with production already surpassing last year’s record of 562,091 metric tonnes.
As of 26 October 2025, a total of 578,059 metric tonnes have been harvested from 110,543 hectares, with an additional 12,023 hectares expected to be harvested by the first week of November.
The country’s wheat production has increased significantly, from 94,685 metric tonnes in 2019 to the current record-breaking levels, representing a 511% increase. This achievement makes Zimbabwe one of only two wheat self-sufficient countries in Africa.
With the national annual requirement estimated at 360,000 metric tonnes, Zimbabwe is now seeking export markets for its surplus wheat. However, the government has announced that it will continue to import wheat with higher gluten content, which is not locally produced, to cater to the needs of certain millers.
To maintain price stability, the government has been distributing wheat to millers, and registered millers can approach the government for assistance to ensure a stable wheat supply.
