Police in Bulawayo are investigating an armed robbery in which a 35-year-old Hillcrest woman lost more than US$11,700 and R4,500 during a violent home invasion on Saturday morning.

According to Assistant Inspector Thandekile Ndlovu, the Bulawayo Police Deputy Spokesperson, the robbery occurred around 8am while the woman was at home with her children.

The suspects, armed with a firearm and a knife, forced their way into the house, demanded cellphones from the children, and proceeded to tie the woman’s hands before stealing the cash from her bedroom. The robbers also took her car keys before fleeing the scene.

“The victim directed them to where the money was were they took US$200 under a laptop, US$140 and 4 500 ZAR inside a purse.

The robbers proceeded to open the victim’s safe which contained US$11 380,” said inspector Ndlovu.

Police have since issued a warning to the public, advising residents against keeping large sums of money at home, and encouraging the use of formal banking services for safe storage of funds.

Authorities are appealing to anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects to report to the nearest police station.
