The Bulawayo City Council has urged residents to be on high alert and take precautionary measures as heavy rains are expected to intensify in the coming weeks, increasing the risk of flooding and weather-related accidents.
Speaking on Skyz Metro FM’s City Matters programme, Engineer Howard Njabulo Sibanda from the Council’s Works Department and Victor Jele from the Fire and Ambulance Services issued a joint appeal for communities to prepare early and stay safe.
Engineer Sibanda encouraged residents to follow weather updates closely, noting that forecasts can help people make informed decisions during rapidly changing weather conditions.
He warned that this year’s rainfall could be heavier than normal, urging residents to limit unnecessary movement, whether on foot or by car and during storms to reduce the risk of accidents.
He also advised households to take practical steps such as keeping electrical appliances away from water, covering open pits, and clearing waste or debris that could block drains or spread disease. “Homes should have proper drainage systems like weep holes to allow rainwater to flow freely and avoid flooding in one area,” he said.
Adding to the message, Victor Jele from the Fire and Ambulance Services stressed the importance of having emergency plans at family and community level. He urged residents in low-lying areas to identify safe evacuation points such as churches, schools, or community halls in advance.
“In case of rising water levels, report immediately so that emergency teams can respond quickly and prevent loss of life or property,” Jele said.
