The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development has officially opened the first phase of the Cecil Avenue Road Rehabilitation Project in Bulawayo, a development expected to ease congestion and strengthen regional trade links.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony on Tuesday, Acting Provincial Engineer Tatenda Nyikayaramba said the road is a key link connecting Harare Road, Gwanda Road, and eventually Plumtree and Victoria Falls roads, allowing motorists and haulage trucks to bypass Bulawayo’s city centre.

Secretary for Provincial Affairs and Devolution in Bulawayo Mr Paul Nyoni said the project will help decongest the city by redirecting heavy trucks transporting machinery and goods between major centres.

He added that improved infrastructure reduces travel time and enhances the movement of goods and services, boosting trade and commuter comfort.

“This is a critical part of infrastructural development because, at the end of the day, what we want to do with infrastructure is facilitate trade, while reducing the time it takes to move goods and services between centers,’ said Mr Nyoni.

So far, two kilometres of the six-kilometre road have been completed under the Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme, with the remaining section expected to be finished before the end of next year.
