Just 48 hours before Zimbabwe step onto the continental stage against seven-time champions Egypt, the Warriors’ AFCON preparations have been rocked by the sudden withdrawal of key midfielder Andy Rinomhota, dealing a psychological and tactical blow to the national team camp in Morocco.

Rinomhota, who turns out for English League One side Reading, pulled out of the squad with immediate effect due to an urgent family matter, leaving the Warriors technical team scrambling on the eve of the tournament opener.

In a heartfelt statement released on his social media platforms, the 27-year-old revealed that the situation at home demands his full personal attention, conceding that he is not in the right mental space to perform at the level required for a competition of Africa Cup of Nations magnitude.

“I am deeply gutted to miss out on a tournament of this magnitude,” Rinomhota said, describing national duty as a source of immense pride and honour. “While I was fully committed to this opportunity, the timing of this family matter means I am not in the right psychological space to give the team my very best.”

The midfielder stressed that the decision was not taken lightly and reaffirmed his commitment to the Warriors, expressing hope of returning to national duty, once the family situation is resolved. He also extended his best wishes to his teammates and the technical team, pledging to support the squad from afar as Zimbabwe begin their campaign.

Rinomhota further thanked the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) for the opportunity and support, while appealing for privacy for himself and his family during the difficult period.

His withdrawal comes at a critical moment for the Warriors, who are preparing to face an experienced Egyptian side in their opening Group match on Monday.

Rinomhota’s absence removes a key engine from Zimbabwe’s midfield, known for his work rate, composure and ability to link defence and attack.

As the countdown to kick-off continues, the Warriors must now rally together, drawing strength from unity and resilience, as they seek to overcome adversity and fly the national flag high on Africa’s biggest football stage.
