Unrest sweeping across Iran shows no sign of easing, with human rights groups reporting that at least 36 people have been killed and more than 2 000 protesters detained since demonstrations erupted last week.
The protests began in Tehran’s Grand Bazaar and quickly spread nationwide, driven by anger over worsening economic conditions, soaring inflation and a plunging currency. Demonstrations have now been reported in dozens of cities and provinces, with thousands taking to the streets despite a heavy security presence.
Security forces have used tear gas and other crowd-control measures to disperse crowds, and clashes have been reported in major urban centres. Iranian authorities have not released official casualty figures, but rights monitors say the toll includes civilians and security personnel.
Meanwhile, President Masoud Pezeshkian has urged security forces to show restraint and distinguish between peaceful protesters and violent rioters, as calls for economic reform and political change continue to echo across the country.
The situation remains volatile as demonstrators press on and authorities tighten their response.
