Villagers in Tsholotsho’s Ntulula area have been left stranded following heavy rains linked to Cyclone Dudzai, which dumped up to 75 millimetres of rainfall in the district.
Transport has been cut off after the Pumula River flooded, leaving buses and other vehicles stuck more than 60 kilometres from Tsholotsho business centre.
Ntulula village headman, Mswigana, told our reporter Sibonginkosi Maphosa that the situation is worsening, with villagers unable to carry out daily activities due to swollen rivers and streams.
“People cannot cross rivers, transport has stopped, and access to markets and services is now a serious challenge,” Mswigana said.
He added that the community may now need urgent government assistance as access to transport, markets and basic services remains disrupted.
Meanwhile, the Meteorological Services Department says heavy rains are expected to continue over the next three days, with rainfall ranging between 45 and 90 millimetres.
The Civil Protection Unit has advised people in low-lying areas to move to higher ground as a precaution.
