Two people are dead and at least seventeen others injured after a commuter omnibus crashed into pedestrians in Bulawayo yesterday, renewing urgent concerns over safety at illegal taxi ranks in the city centre.

Police say the incident happened Wednesday night, shortly before 9pm, at the intersection of 6th Avenue and Lobengula Street, where a Toyota Baby Quantum was allegedly picking up passengers at an undesignated spot.

ZRP confirmed that the vehicle struck pedestrians and vendors before colliding with another commuter omnibus. Two people died at the scene, while seventeen injured victims were taken to hospital, some in serious condition.

Witnesses told police the driver tried to flee on foot but was arrested moments later. Investigations are underway, and authorities say the death toll could rise.

The crash has renewed calls to restore order around illegal taxi ranks near the CBD, despite the designated Egodini rank being nearby.
