A senior Russian military intelligence official has been shot in Moscow, raising fresh security concerns amid the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Russian authorities say Lieutenant General Vladimir Alekseyev, a deputy chief of military intelligence, was wounded in a gun attack inside a residential building in the Russian capital. State media report he was shot several times and has been hospitalised.
The Russian Investigative Committee says an unidentified suspect opened fire at a building along Volokolamsk Highway before fleeing the scene. Spokesperson Svetlana Petrenko says a criminal case has been opened for attempted murder and illegal possession of firearms. Investigators are reviewing CCTV footage and questioning witnesses.
Alekseyev serves as deputy head of the Main Directorate of the General Staff. He previously took part in negotiations with Wagner Group leader Yevgeny Prigozhin during the 2023 rebellion.
Several senior Russian officers have been targeted since the war in Ukraine began, with Moscow often blaming Kyiv. Ukrainian intelligence has, in some cases, claimed responsibility.
