Zimbabwe says it is modernising its transport systems through artificial intelligence and digital reforms, a move government officials argue will improve road safety, reduce corruption, and align the country with global standards.
Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister, Hon. Adv. Felix T. Mhona, made the remarks while addressing the 88th Session of the Inland Transport Committee in Geneva, Switzerland, on 18 February 2026.
The session brought together international transport policymakers under the theme โDriving innovation for the future of inland transport.โ
In his address, Minister Mhona said Zimbabwe has introduced AI-powered traffic management systems equipped with smart cameras capable of automatically detecting traffic violations. Some of the systems are solar-powered, according to the Minister.
He also outlined reforms in public transport management, including the use of digital fleet-monitoring systems that track vehicles in real time and improve data management. The Minister said ride-hailing platforms are contributing to efforts to ease congestion in urban centres.
Zimbabwe has also rolled out an Integrated Transport Management Information System, which replaces paper-based processes with digital platforms for vehicle registration, licensing, and inspections. The Minister added that advanced brake-testing machines have been introduced to enhance road safety and reduce opportunities for corruption.
Through its participation in the Working Party on Automated and Connected Vehicles under the Inland Transport Committee framework, Zimbabwe is working to align its policies with international standards, he said.
Minister Mhona told delegates that innovation is already shaping Zimbabweโs transport sector rather than remaining a future ambition.
