A Bulawayo-based traditional dance group, Thandanani Women’s Ensemble, continues to play a significant role in promoting and preserving Zimbabwean culture more than three decades after its formation in 1990.
Founded by a group of women with diverse skills such as cooking, sewing, baking, dancing and acting, the ensemble has grown into a dedicated cultural performance group. It now comprises 12 members aged between 28 and 75, reflecting a strong intergenerational commitment to tradition.
In an interview with Skyz Metro FM, group leader Gogo Matshabalala said, “preserving cultural heritage remains at the heart of our work .
Over the years, the ensemble has collaborated with international production companies, recorded music, and performed at regional events, including the Umhlanga Amarula Festival. The group has also broadened its appeal, performing at weddings and birthday celebrations.
Beyond the stage, Thandanani prioritises community engagement by educating young people on cultural preservation while creating income-generating opportunities for women.
The ensemble remains active in regional cultural exchanges, contributing to platforms that bring together women from across the SADC region to celebrate and sustain African traditions.
