Zimbabwe has strengthened its position in Africa’s digital transformation drive after Information, Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services Minister Honourable Tatenda Mavetera was appointed to the newly formed Africa Artificial Intelligence Council under the Smart Africa initiative.

The Council, set up by the Smart Africa Board chaired by Rwandan President Paul Kagame, brings together African leaders, senior African Union officials, the International Telecommunication Union, and key development partners to guide the continent’s approach to artificial intelligence.

Minister Mavetera joins a select group of seven ICT ministers tasked with shaping Africa’s AI agenda, focusing on governance, innovation, skills development, investment, and ethical use of emerging technologies.

The appointment reflects Zimbabwe’s growing policy readiness, following Cabinet’s approval of the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy last month, and the country’s leadership in digital agriculture under Vision 2030.
