Escaped Murder Convict Rearrested at Airport

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed the arrest of 38-year-old Mike Cabangani Mathe, who escaped from lawful custody at Plumtree Prison in November last year.

Mathe was serving a 20-year sentence for rape and murder when he broke out on 15 November 2025 and fled the country.

He was rearrested on 24 February 2026 at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport in Harare after being deported from Malawi.

Authorities have not yet provided details on how he escaped or the circumstances surrounding his deportation.
