Zimbabwe’s hopes of reaching the semifinals of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup took a major hit after a 72-run defeat to India in their Super Eight clash in Chennai on Thursday night.

Chasing a huge score of 257 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Zimbabwe finished on 184 for six despite a defiant unbeaten 97 from Brian Bennett.

India had earlier powered to 256 for four after blistering late hitting from Hardik Pandya and Tilak Varma, who combined for an unbroken 84-run stand in the final overs. Abhishek Sharma also struck a rapid 55.

In reply, Bennett anchored Zimbabwe’s chase with six sixes and eight fours, sharing key partnerships with Sikandar Raza, who made 31. However, regular wickets stalled momentum.

Arshdeep Singh led India’s bowling effort with three for 24, sealing the win for the hosts.
