The Government says the proposed US$2.18 billion railway project between Zimbabwe and Zambia is expected to improve regional transport efficiency, lower logistics costs and strengthen access to the ports of Beira, Durban and Dar es Salaam.

Cabinet noted outcomes from the Pan-African Mineral Development Company Council of Ministers meeting hosted by Zimbabwe and Zambia in Victoria Falls last month. The meeting recommended engagement with South Africa on issues affecting the company.

Among the proposals were the appointment of South Africa’s board members, restoration of mineral rights to their original status and the waiving of statutory debts linked to the entity.

Government also noted the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Zimbabwe and Zambia for feasibility studies and development of a railway line linking Kafue in Zambia to Chirundu, Lion’s Den and Machipanda in Zimbabwe.

The two countries agreed that Mozambique’s participation would be important for successful implementation of the regional transport project.
