Bulawayo Medical Practitioner and C.E.O of Mpilo Hospital Professor Dr. Solwayo Ngwenya says easing of the lockdown to allow resumption of economic activities might result in a third wave of the Covid 19 virus if locals relax and forget to follow guidelines.
” I would like to warn the public that the government’s measures does not mean that they should relax on their own personal hygiene and the wearing of masks , social distancing and avoiding crowded areas because relaxation to allow for economic activities does not mean that people should relax themselves and get infected by the virus .”
According to Dr. Ngwenya the emergence of a third wave of the pandemic is imminent fueled by the South African growing variant which is now present in the country, the fast approaching winter season and the relaxation of lockdown regulations by the government.
” This Covid 19 is a terrible virus that comes in waves and we coming from the second wave and government made sure that they relaxed measures and the third unfortunately is going to come . The allowing of people to mix again is going to cause the Corona Virus to be resurgent which will spreading very fast . This time the new variant is going to spread new infections fast in communities leading to rapid increases in numbers , so another wave i am afraid is going to come.”
Despite this , Dr Ngwenya acknowledged that it was a welcome move made by government to ease the lockdown as the economy was suffering under the pandemic affecting people’s livelihoods.
Dr Ngwenya’s remarks come after lockdown regulations were eased which will see intercity travel being permitted and informal workers returning to their daily activities.
