The coronation of Miss Tourism Zimbabwe 2021 , Chipo Mandiudza has sparked outrage on social media as locals allege her coronation was a dodgy affair.
Mandiudza was crowned Miss Tourism Zimbabwe 2021 at a colourful ceremony held at a city lodge on Tuesday evening in the presence of the beauty pageants’ Bulawayo License holder Nobesuthu Masango.
Posting on social media platform Face Book , Samantha N Tshuma founder of Open Eye Studio , queried the coronation alleging that modelling agencies were not invited to the event and were still waiting for the auditions.
“We have been grooming and training kids for the biggest show in Bulawayo and we wake up to a Queen.This does not make sense. We have got nothing against her her , we would like to know when and how she was crowned? ” , she said.
According to Nobesuthu Masango the Miss Tourism Bulawayo license holder , due to the Covid 19 pandemic which resulted in the cancellation of most activities in the country , Mandiudza was selected from a list of eligible contestants from 2019.
” The COVID-19 times have had an adverse impact on all industries and the beauty, fashion and modeling industry has not been spared.
As Miss Tourism Zimbabwe we were led into a forced sabbatical ofcourse coupled with the aftereffects of the 2019 MTZ horrible near fatal accident.
The break has had to come to an abrupt end due to pressure from the Miss Tourism International we had to choose a delegate to the world final pageant.
In an all fairness gesture we decided to give a first refusal offer to the 2019 finalists.
Consideration and engagements done,only a few responded with some unfortunately sighting having reached the cut off age, some married or engaged and some with child or now mothers.
Of the few who sent in their documents and fell within the MTI criteria for judging, a winner was identified by our highly able national and international judges who include former beauty queens and business women , Lorraine Maphala-Phiri, Nokuthaba Sibanda Manungo, Sibusisiwe Dube who is also the chairperson of MTZ, an internationally acclaimed model based in Germany Marble Nyathi and Mr Godfrey Koti a model who is currently the ZTA head of corporate affairs and president of ZIPR leading to the sashing and crowning of Chipo Mandiudza”.
Meanwhile speaking to Skyz Metro fm news Miss Tourism Zimbabwe said she is ready and geared to fulfill her mandate.
“Because of the Covid 19 pandemic we are living in a digitilised environment and i will use this to promote domestic products. The pandemic affected severely the Tourism sector and this has given me the chance to promote domestic and national tourism”.
The 21 year old resides in Sizinda and is a second year Marketing Student at the Lupane State University.
She will represent Zimbabwe at the Miss Tourism World finals set for the 24th of December in Malaysia.
