NAMA Honors 40 Legends

Various artistes from Bulawayo received the National Arts and Merit Awards ( NAMA ) Legends @40 award over the weekend for their contribution and impact in the arts sector since 1980 .

Notable NAMA legends include Actress, Dancer and Story teller Ellen Mlangeni , Nkululeko Innocent Dube, Renowned historian and author Phathisa Nyathi ,renowed poet Albert Nyathi, Adam Madebe , Felix Moyo, Rashid Jogee​​​​​ ,Matesu Dube as well as Playwright Cont Madladla Mhlanga.

Skyz Metro fm news spoke to some of the artists from Bulawayo who were honored with the legends awards .

Gogo Ellen Mlangeni said she is happy she received this award which is a sign of true hard work and dedication.

Ugogo uMlangeni said that she has never received such recognition and is extremely grateful to NAMA and the rest of the country for recognising her as a legend.

“This award gives me the satisfaction for all the work and contributions i have made in the arts industry , i have contributed a lot and i am happy that people did not take my work for granted and appreciate it .”

Asked about her favorite work from One of her favorite roles she played was in the film ‘Isithembo’ which she says gives an insight on how a married woman should behave.

“Isithembo will forever be my favorite role . It showed how a daughter in law is received when she gets married , it portrayed real life experiences and depicted how women should be treated and how they should behave.”

Gogo Mlangeni has not been spared from the challenges of being a woman in the Arts industry as she had to deliver herself from the stereotypical bondage of being looked down upon. She added that it is with is pride that she has kept on fighting her way to the top.

Nkululeko Innocent Dube the brains behind the prominent Inkululeko Yabatsha School of Arts (IYASA), speaking on the recognition expressed his gratitude saying this was a humbling experience for him to be celebrated by NAMA and by the Country at large while he is still alive.

“Most times we always complain that artistes are celebrated once they are dead and i am humbled and happy that i am being celebrated whilst i am still alive by NAMA and the rest of the people .”

Dube added that as the country is still in hard times due to the Covid 19 pandemic the Legends award is an inspiration and encouragement for him to go on with his work .

Renowned historian and author Phathisa Nyathi appreciated the gesture after many years and decades working in the heritage sector.

“Generally i see a new thrust in the arts industry as some are coming in as producers , writers , sculptors the totality of the arts culture and heritage genres so this is why as a result you will find someone you though should have won didn’t because their sector was oversubscribed . It is a good effort and it is an honor which has a government element to it This has never happened in Zimbabwe at the same scale as most of the time people are honored when they are dead.”

NAMA Legends @40 is the brainchild of the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe to celebrate 40 years of Zimbabwe’s independence whilst appreciating those who have captured the lives of many through entertaining and various other creative works .
