The Matebeleland Institute for Human Rights (MIHR) joined the rest of the world on Friday to commemorate the International Day of Older Persons under the theme , “Digital Equity for All Ages” , predicating the need for access and meaningful participation in the digital world by older persons.
As part of the commemorations MIHR called on the government to adopt an older persons inclusive approach in the implementation of the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1) as part of the Vision 2030. Specifically, an older persons inclusive approach which addresses digital equity for all ages will ensure.
MIHR Coordinator Khumbulani Maphosa , said government must come with inclusive measures to address access to digital spaces.
” Government has to address barriers for older people’s access to internet services such as low literacy and skills knowledge levels, exorbitant internet costs, cyber security and cultural inertia for digital technology adoption by the elderly. I urge the government to sign and ratify the Protocol to the African Charter on Humans and Peoples’ Rights on the Rights of Older Persons ” , he said.
The special day for the elderly is celebrated every year on October 1 with the aim to spread awareness about issues affecting the elderly.
