Former Zambian President Edgar Lungu, who served as Zambia’s President from 2015 to 2021, has died at the age of 68. His political party, the Patriotic Front (PF), announced his passing today.

The PF confirmed on their Facebook page that Lungu had been receiving specialized medical treatment in South Africa for an undisclosed illness. His death was further confirmed by his daughter and a family lawyer, according to the party.

Lungu’s six-year tenure as president concluded in 2021 when he lost the general election to the current President Hakainde Hichilema by a significant margin. Following this defeat, Lungu initially withdrew from active politics.

However, he later re-emerged, hinting at a potential return to the political arena and seemingly harboring ambitions for another presidential bid.
