The State has withdrawn fraud charges against businessman Moses Mpofu and ZANU-PF Central Committee member Mike Chimombe, who were accused of unlawfully obtaining a lighting tender from the Harare City Council. The charges were dropped just as trial proceedings were set to begin.

Mpofu and Chimombe had been in remand prison for over 11 months. No explanation was provided for the withdrawal, effectively ending the case tied to the controversial Harare lighting contract.

However, both men still face separate legal challenges. Chimombe remains accused in a US$87 million goat supply tender case, while Mpofu faces two unresolved cases, one involving the same goat tender and another related to a bio-gas agreement with Harare City Council.

The goat tender case, currently before Justice Kwenda, has also shown signs of weakening, casting doubt on the overall strength of the prosecution’s remaining cases.
