Veteran batter Sean Williams produced a brilliant 137-run knock to lead Zimbabwe’s fightback on Day 2 of the first Test against South Africa at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo yesterday.
South Africa began the day by declaring on their overnight total of 418 for 9, leaving Zimbabwe with a mountain to climb.
The hosts stumbled early, losing opener Takudzwanashe Kaitano for a golden duck. Nick Welch and Brian Bennett also fell cheaply, with Zimbabwe reeling at 23 for 2. Bennett was later withdrawn under concussion rules after being hit on the helmet and replaced by Prince Masvaure.
Skipper Craig Ervine and Williams began to rebuild, putting on 91 runs before Ervine was stumped for 36. Wessly Madhevere added 15 before falling lbw, but Williams powered on, bringing up his sixth Test century to loud applause.
Masvaure’s controversial dismissal sparked outrage in the stands, as TV replays left questions unanswered. Tafadzwa Tsiga also fell before tea, leaving Zimbabwe at 212 for 6.
Williams’ brilliant innings ended on 137, after carrying the innings nearly single-handedly. Zimbabwe were bowled out for 251.
In reply, South Africa reached 49 for 1 at stumps, with Tony de Zorzi and Wiaan Mulder unbeaten. They now lead by 216 runs heading to Day 3.
