Zimbabwe’s Sean Williams delivered a fighting unbeaten 83, but it wasn’t enough to stop South Africa from dominating day two of the second Test at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo yesterday.

South Africa declared their innings at 626 for five, thanks largely to Wiaan Mulder’s historic 367 not out, the highest individual Test score on Zimbabwean soil and fifth-highest in the format’s history.

Mulder shared an unbroken 113-run stand with Kyle Verreynne, who contributed 42 not out, before the visitors declared at lunch.

Zimbabwe’s reply started in disaster. Three wickets fell cheaply, with Takudzwanashe Kaitano dismissed off the very first ball. The home side collapsed to 56 for five, prompting Williams to counterattack.

Despite battling illness, Matebeleland Tuskers batsman smashed the fastest Test half-century ever by a Zimbabwean, reaching 50 off just 32 balls. He remained unbeaten on 83 off 55 balls, striking seven fours and two sixes, as Zimbabwe were bowled out for 170.

South Africa enforced the follow-on with a 456-run lead.

In their second innings, Zimbabwe showed more fight. Kaitano and Dion Myers put on 31 for the first wicket before Myers was bowled for 11.

Zimbabwe ended the day on 51 for one, still trailing by 405 runs. A tough third day awaits.
