Over 140 young people in Matobo’s Ward 1 have been empowered through a local skills development initiative aimed at tackling drug and substance abuse and youth unemployment in the area.

Speaking to SkyzMetro FM in an interview, Matobo Ward 1 Councillor Nkosiyazi Fuyane stated that the programme was launched to address the gap in soft skills and vocational training for young people in the area.

Councillor Fuyane explained that due to the lack of an established vocational training centre in the area, they partnered with institutions in Bulawayo to deliver weekend training sessions.

“We partnered with institutions in Bulawayo to run weekend training sessions so young people here can gain practical, employable skills,” said Fuyane.

The Councillor further added that they are conducting regular follow-ups to monitor the progress of the beneficiaries and ensure the long-term success of the programme.

So far, 61 youths have secured employment through the program mainly in till operations and merchandising in towns such as Maphisa, Gwanda, Bulawayo, Plumtree, and Beitbridge.

In addition, 40 others have pursued technical fields, 11 in solar system installations, 12 in motor mechanics, and 17 in hotel and catering.

The programme continues to grow, bringing hope and opportunity to the youth of Matobo.
