Bulawayo City Council has voted to renew the contract of Town Clerk Christopher Dube, giving him another five years at the helm of the city’s administration.
The decision was made during a special council meeting on Thursday, where 17 councillors supported the extension, seven voted against it, and one abstained. The motion to renew his term was tabled by Ward 3 Councillor Mxolisi Mahlangu and seconded by Ward 15 Councillor Ashton Mhlanga.
Dube, who has served as Town Clerk since 2016, is credited by his supporters for steering the city through major challenges, including severe water shortages and the COVID-19 pandemic. However, some councillors argued that Bulawayo needs fresh leadership to address persistent issues such as poor road conditions and slow service delivery.
With his contract now officially renewed, Dube is expected to prioritise service improvement, accelerate stalled development projects, and strengthen the city’s financial management.
His new term comes at a time when Bulawayo continues to grapple with population pressures, shrinking revenue, and climate-related challenges.
