A mine bus driver was injured on Tuesday after a collision with a train at a level crossing in Hwange, the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) has confirmed.

The accident occurred at the Old Hwange Number 2 level crossing when the bus driver reportedly attempted to beat an oncoming train but failed to clear the tracks in time.

The train struck the bus, causing injuries to the driver. NRZ officials say the injured driver was swiftly attended to and taken to a local hospital for medical treatment.

No fatalities were reported, and it is understood that no passengers were on board the bus at the time of the incident.

In a statement, the rail authority reiterated the dangers associated with ignoring safety procedures at level crossings, warning motorists against attempting to cross rail tracks when a train is approaching.

NRZ said trains cannot stop abruptly, and motorists who attempt to beat them place their lives and the lives of others at serious risk.

The incident has once again brought attention to the growing number of accidents at level crossings, many of which are attributed to human error and failure to observe traffic rules.

Authorities are urging all road users, particularly drivers of public service to exercise extreme caution at rail crossings and to obey warning signals in order to prevent injuries, loss of life and damage to infrastructure.

Investigations into the accident are ongoing.
