A 44-year-old Bulawayo man, Trust Busani Ncube, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison by the Tredgold Regional Magistrates’ Court for damaging electricity infrastructure belonging to the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC).

The court heard that on 30 November 2025, at around 10PM, Ncube and accomplices who are still at large targeted armoured copper electricity cables at an airstrip near ZNA Khumalo Barracks in Bulawayo.

Prosecutors told the court the suspects dug a trench measuring about five metres long and 1.2 metres deep, using picks in an attempt to access the underground cables.

The damage resulted in power outages in Khumalo, Paddonhurst and Emhlangeni suburbs, affecting households and essential services. The estimated value of the damage was placed at US$1,250.

Ncube was arrested at the scene by Zimbabwe National Army personnel who were on routine patrol. His accomplices managed to escape and are yet to be apprehended.
