The Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe (BAZ) has warned content creators against publishing explicit material in the public domain, saying such content poses a risk to children and undermines national moral standards.
In a statement, the regulator said while the Constitution guarantees freedom of expression, it also places a responsibility on creators to respect the rights of others and protect minors from harmful material.
BAZ cited the Broadcasting Services Act (Chapter 12:06), which prohibits the transmission or publication of indecent or obscene content and prioritises the best interests of the child. The authority also referenced the Censorship and Entertainment Control Act, which outlaws offensive material deemed contrary to Zimbabwe’s moral values.
BAZ Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Engineer Matthias Chakanyuka said the authority will enforce existing laws to safeguard children and uphold Zimbabwean values in the digital space.
BAZ urged broadcasters and online content creators to ensure their material complies with national legislation and respects the dignity of all citizens, particularly minors.
