Zimbabweans in need of safe blood transfusions could soon benefit from improved screening, following the commissioning of new testing equipment at the National Blood Service Zimbabwe.

The National Blood Service Zimbabwe has installed a Nucleic Acid Testing machine designed to strengthen blood safety and enable earlier detection of infections. Health officials say the technology enhances screening accuracy, helping reduce the risk of transfusion-transmitted diseases.

The equipment was commissioned through a partnership involving the Ministry of Health and Child Care, National AIDS Council, Cluster Diagnostics and Grifols Incorporated.

NBSZ chairperson Advocate Passmore Nyakureba pledged to ensure the equipment is used responsibly and expressed appreciation for the support received.

Meanwhile, the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe also contributed blood bags to assist national blood collection efforts.
