The United States says it will begin reducing health assistance to Zimbabwe after the government halted negotiations on a proposed five-year funding agreement, a move that could affect HIV treatment and other critical programmes.
In a statement, the United States Embassy in Harare said the planned deal would have provided about 367 million US dollars to support HIV and AIDS services, tuberculosis and malaria treatment, maternal and child health, and epidemic preparedness.
U.S. Ambassador to Zimbabwe Pamela Tremont said the partnership would have supported nearly 1.2 million people currently receiving HIV treatment under U.S.-backed programmes.
She added that the United States must ensure accountability, transparency, and shared responsibility when investing its resources.
The Embassy says since 2006, the U.S. has provided more than 1.9 billion US dollars for health programmes in Zimbabwe, and similar agreements have been signed with 16 African countries.
The Government of Zimbabwe has not yet publicly responded to the Embassy’s statement.
