Bulawayo City Council (BCC) says it is stepping up efforts to secure long-term water supplies, as the city faces ongoing shortages that affect residents and industry.

This came during the Trade Effluent and Water Recycling Indaba which was hosted by Bulawayo City Council yesterday.

The meeting was held with Vitens Evides International under the WaterWorX Programme, with support from PUM Netherlands, bringing together partners to explore sustainable wastewater management and reuse options.

In his address, Bulawayo Mayor Senator David Coltart, said persistent water shortages are straining the city’s sewer and water systems. He raised concern over illegal mining along riverbanks, which he says has damaged tributaries feeding key dams.

The Mayor also urged faster progress on short to medium-term projects, including the proposed Glasblock Dam, saying reliance on the long-term Gwayi-Shangani Dam project could delay relief.
