Sibanye Academy of Cowdray Park on Saturday received a football kit from public representatives after they fulfilled a pledge made during the 2025 MK Indlovukazi Annual Women’s Football Tournament.
The kit was handed over by PR Councillor Mohamed Lezina, Youth Quota Member of Parliament Sikhuphukile Dube and Women’s Quota Member of Parliament Samukeliso Maseko, who have continued to support initiatives aimed at empowering young people through sport.
Sibanye Academy were crowned champions of the fourth edition of the MK Indlovukazi Soccer Girls Tournament, which was held at 11th Street Grounds in Makokoba on 15 November 2025.
The tournament is organised by Mkhumbuta Ndlovu, a passionate advocate for women’s football, an accomplished former Highlanders Royals player, and a former player for Joburg United FC and Bantwana College in South Africa.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, Ndlovu applauded the representatives for fulfilling their commitment and supporting the development of girls’ football.
“Supporting girls in sport is important because it gives them confidence, discipline, and a platform to showcase their talent. When we invest in the girl child, we are helping to create opportunities that can change their lives,” said Ndlovu.
Women’s Quota Member of Parliament Samukeliso Maseko said supporting women’s sport was part of empowering young girls and ensuring they have opportunities to develop their talents.
“We are passionate about seeing young girls being given opportunities to participate and excel in sport. Football is not only about competition; it builds confidence, discipline, and leadership among young women. As leaders, we will continue supporting initiatives that uplift the girl child and create positive spaces for them to grow,” said Maseko.
Youth Quota Member of Parliament Sikhuphukile Dube said sport remains a powerful tool in keeping young people focused and away from activities that may negatively affect their future.
“Sport gives young people purpose, discipline and a sense of belonging. When we create platforms like these, we help young people focus on developing their talents and making positive choices. We want to see more young people engaged in activities that build their future,” said Dube.
Earlier in the day, the representatives visited Jairos Jiri Center, where they donated groceries, including rice and sugar beans, as part of their community outreach programme.
Maseko said supporting vulnerable groups remains an important part of their work in the community.
“We must continue looking after those who need support in our communities. Whether it is empowering young girls through sport or extending a helping hand to vulnerable members of society, these actions remind us of the importance of compassion and community responsibility,” she said.
Meanwhile, an additional donation of rice was made to both Sibanye Academy and their opponents for the day, Streets Set FC, where both teams received 50kg each to share amongst its players.
The representatives said they remain committed to supporting grassroots sport and community initiatives across Makokoba and surrounding areas.
