Police in Beitbridge have made several arrests in connection with the illegal possession of dagga and Broncleer cough syrup, as law enforcement steps up the fight against drug trafficking along the border.
On Saturday, the 15th of June, detectives from the CID Drugs and Narcotics Unit intercepted a haulage truck at Bubi Roadblock and arrested 41-year-old Temptation Guzhira. The truck was found carrying a stash of dagga and 289 bottles of Broncleer cough syrup, a controlled substance commonly abused as a recreational drug.
Meanwhile, also on the 15th of June, police arrested Brighton Bongiseni and Pardon Mutsvairo, aged 36 and 34 respectively, during routine searches at the Northbound bus bay at Beitbridge Border Post. Officers discovered 222 bottles of Broncleer concealed in two 20-litre containers.
In a separate incident the following day, Philip Gangata, aged 53, was arrested at the Beitbridge Border Post. Authorities recovered 50 boxes of Broncleer, each containing 100ml bottles, hidden inside his truck.
The suspects are expected to appear in court soon as investigations continue. ZRP highlighted that these arrests are part of a wider crackdown aimed at curbing drug trafficking and abuse across the country.
Authorities have since urged transport operators and members of the public to refrain from being used as conduits for drug smuggling and warned that anyone caught will face the full force of the law.
