Zimbabwe has been plunged into darkness since earlier this afternoon following a loss of power generation at both Kariba and Hwange Power Stations.

The Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) has confirmed that restoration efforts are currently underway.

According to a statement from the power utility, the system disturbance occurred at 2PM today, on Thursday, 3 July.

“ZESA Holdings wishes to inform its valued stakeholders of a nationwide power outage that occurred today due to a system disturbance,” the statement read.

The incident resulted in the total loss of generation from Kariba and Hwange, while interconnections with the regional power pool—National Transmission (South Africa), ZESCO (Zambia), and HCB (Mozambique)—were also simultaneously lost.

Despite the setback, ZESA confirmed that power had already been restored in some areas, with teams continuing to work around the clock to restore electricity supply to the remaining affected regions.
