A key stretch of the Bulawayo–Victoria Falls Road has been temporarily closed to allow for major rehabilitation works, the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development has announced.

The closure, which took effect today, will remain in place until 31 July 2026, impacting traffic from the Bulawayo Central Business District to the Livingstone Bridge. This comes as part of the first phase of the government’s large-scale road rehabilitation programme aimed at restoring the country’s transport corridors.

According to the ministry, construction will initially focus on the segment between Chainage 99.6km and 104.6km in the Insuza area, a critical stretch known to carry both passenger and commercial traffic.

“To facilitate construction, a temporary road closure will be in effect from Bulawayo CBD to Livingstone Bridge, beginning 14 July 2025 until 31 July 2026,” the ministry said in a statement.

“The first phase of construction will focus on the section between Chainage 99.6km and 104.6km (Insuza area).”

Motorists are being advised to use designated detours and are urged to observe temporary signage and speed reductions in the construction zones.

“All motorists are urged to follow the temporary signage diligently, reduce speed significantly within the detour area for the safety of the public and construction personnel,” the ministry said.

Authorities have further warned that failure to comply with road signs or attempts to enter closed-off areas will be treated as unlawful and unsafe.

The ministry has committed to providing regular progress updates and has appealed to the public for patience during the upgrade.

“We sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to deliver these critical infrastructure improvements for our nation,” read part of the statement.

The works form part of the ongoing national campaign to modernise road infrastructure, branded under the #KILOMETERBYKILOMETER initiative.
