Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has died at the age of 82 after a prolonged illness. He passed away in London on Sunday at around 4:30 p.m., according to a statement from the presidential press office.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended his condolences to Buhari’s family and has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel to the United Kingdom to accompany the former leader’s body back to Nigeria.
Buhari, a former military general, served as Nigeria’s president from 2015 to 2023 after previously leading the country as a military ruler from 1983 to 1985. Known for his strong stance against corruption and commitment to national unity, Buhari was widely respected for his disciplined approach to governance.
Born in December 1942 in Daura, Katsina State, Buhari trained as a soldier in Nigeria, the UK, India, and the United States. He remained a prominent figure in Nigerian politics for decades, transitioning from military leadership to democratic governance.
He is survived by his wife, Aisha Buhari, and ten children.
