Suspected Mental Patient Arrested for Brutal Murder of Five in Madlambuzi

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed the arrest of a suspected mental patient in connection with the brutal murder of five people and the attempted murder of two others in Madlambuzi, Matabeleland South Province.
According to a statement released by the ZRP yesterday, the horrific incident occurred on August 20, 2025, when Phamani Sibanda (43), reportedly went on a violent rampage through the village, attacking residents with a Mopani log, a blunt object, and an unidentified sharp weapon. According to police, he targeted anyone he came across during the violent outburst.
Five victims died on the spot and were identified as Elliot Khuphe (101), Butho Tshuma (97), Constance Sibanda (66), Tiffan Surprise Ndlovu (6), all from Bellas Village, and Cantra Matsika (72) of Central Village. Two female victims, aged 90 and 41, sustained serious injuries and were admitted to Madlambuzi Clinic and Plumtree District Hospital.
The ZRP urged the public to ensure mental health patients receive proper medical attention and are closely monitored. Authorities also encouraged citizens to report any suspected violent or unusual behavior to the police via the National Complaints Desk or the nearest police station.
