Man Dies After Being Struck with a Log at a Family Gathering in Esigodini

A 54-year-old man, Norman Moyo, has died from injuries he sustained after being struck with a wooden log by his nephew during a family gathering in Crocodile Village at Esigodini on 9 September 2025.

According to a press release from the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) in Esigodini, the incident occurred around 10pm during a celebration for the return of the accused,Sekhona Nkomo aged 25, from South Africa.

A misunderstanding arose between the two men over a “social issue” related to Norman Moyo selling a cow to the accused’s father.

The accused, Sekhona Nkomo, then allegedly picked up a wooden log and struck Norman Moyo twice on the back of the neck, causing him to fall to the ground.

Moyo suffered a swollen head from the assault and was taken to Esigodini District Hospital before being transferred to Mpilo Central Hospital for further treatment.

The matter was reported to the police, and Sekhona Nkomo was arrested. Eight days after the assault, on 17 September 2025, Norman Moyo succumbed to his injuries at Mpilo Hospital.

Police have stated that investigations into the case are currently in progress.
