The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) in Matabeleland South has urged communities to report sexual abuse cases early, following a disturbing case where a victim only came forward three months after the incidents began.
Police say the 15-year-old complainant was left in the custody of her uncle together with her siblings in June 2025. During that time, the accused allegedly took advantage of the situation and repeatedly raped the girl, threatening her with violence if she resisted or spoke out.
The matter only came to light on 14 September 2025, when the victim confided in someone about the abuse, leading to a police report and medical examination. The accused person is still at large, and a manhunt has been launched.
ZRP stressed the importance of early reporting in order to protect victims and bring perpetrators to justice swiftly.
ZRP also announced plans to intensify awareness campaigns in schools, especially in remote areas, to encourage young people to report abuse without delay.
