Disability rights advocates in Zimbabwe are calling for a more inclusive national budget that addresses the pressing needs of low-income and vulnerable groups.
Speaking during a youth-focused pre-budget consultation, Tsepang Nare from the National Association of Societies for the Care of the Handicapped (NASCOH) urged the government to review the 2% Intermediated Money Transfer Tax (IMTT), proposing an exemption for transactions below US$100.
“For every transaction below US$100, let us not charge that 2% tax because it’s an economic burden to vulnerable communities” said Nare.
Meanwhile Ntandoyenkosi Mnkandla, representing the albino community emphasized the need to decentralize cancer care services and improve healthcare access for people with albinism, including the free distribution of protective skin lotions.
“In as much as the government can provide ARVs for free, government should provide us with free skincare lotions”, he said. “We are a small community and these lotions are an essential need for us”.
Advocates stressed that a people-centered budget must include concrete qsteps toward equality, accessibility, and social protection.
