The Law Society of Zimbabwe (LSZ) President, Councillor Lison Ncube, has called on members of the legal fraternity and corporates to partner with the Society to support vulnerable prisoners and children in correctional facilities.

Speaking at the LSZ President’s Charity Dinner in Harare, which was attended by at least 300 legal practitioners and other professionals, Ncube highlighted the plight of prisoners who lack basic necessities, including uniforms, and children who are born or grow up in prison with their mothers.

“We want to assist with prisoners’ uniforms. We have heard stories of our clients failing to appear in court because they have nothing to wear. Some of them are literally sitting in jail and they are basically naked. We could assist them and we could help them restore their dignity,” said Ncube.

The LSZ President also emphasized the need to establish an institutionalized response to the plight of children and infants in correctional facilities, who are often incarcerated with their mothers or are in custody of the state due to various circumstances.

“We also wish to assist with the establishment of an institutionalized response to the plight of children and infants in correctional facilities. There is a category of these children who are in this predicament because they are the offspring of mothers jailed for one offense or another. Then some juveniles are in custody of the state because they violated the law in one way or the other. These also need our support.

“We want to support them with education, with welfare, with healthcare, and social justice. Your contribution can be that catalyst for the change that we seek to bring and the change that we desire,” Ncube appealed to the gathering.

The Charity Dinner was a resounding success, bringing together members of the legal fraternity and other stakeholders to make a difference in the lives of those in need.
